The unicorn look has been around long enough to have settled rules: pastel rainbow, iridescence, holographic finishes, and something at the head.

What separates a good one from a costume is restraint about the horn. Everything else in the palette can be pushed as far as it goes, but the moment the fantasy element is joined by wings, a tail and a cloud print, the character stops being styled and starts being decorated. Pick one, then let the colour do the rest.
