A metallic or foil finish reflects in one colour. Holographic fabric throws an iridescent swirl that shifts across the spectrum as the light moves, so it is never a single shade and cannot be matched to anything the way silver can. That is the practical problem the game sets: a holographic piece already contains every colour, so a second colour beside it usually fights.
Black, white and grey are the safe partners. Once you have seen that, the wardrobe stops being a pile of shiny things and starts behaving like a rule, and the whole game gets considerably more interesting.
