A competition where everyone is aiming at the same target, which makes every outfit relative: whatever you put on the second character is read against the first.

That is the useful part. Dress them all beautifully and they cancel each other out; the ones that stand out in a line-up are the ones that went somewhere the others did not. Deciding early what each character's angle is, and keeping the four of them apart, is more of the game than any individual garment.
