Flats are the hardest shoe to decorate, because there is so little of them.
A heel gives you a shape to work with. A flat gives you a small curved panel and a topline, which is why the game leans on colour, pattern and tiny applied decorations rather than on silhouette. Ankle bracelets are in here too, and they do more than they look like they should: a line at the ankle breaks the leg and makes the shoe read as a chosen object rather than something you happened to put on.
