Cocktail is the most misread dress code there is: not a ball gown, not a day dress, and the gap between those is narrower than it looks.

The rule that actually holds is length and formality of fabric. Shorter than a gown, dressier than daywear, and one piece of real jewellery rather than several. Almost every mistake in this game comes from treating it as a small ball, which produces something overdressed and slightly sad in a room full of people who read the invitation properly.
