Take the crown away and a princess has to be built out of ordinary clothes, which is a much harder brief than a gown.

That is what makes the campus setting work. Without the jewellery and the sweep, the character has to come through in fit, colour and the two or three pieces that are clearly hers. It is closer to real styling than anything in the ballroom wardrobe, and it is why these college games hold people longer than the formal ones do.
